Icha Vizcarra (Chile)

Icha Vizcarra was born surrounded by metal, watching it melt, fuse, take shape under careful hands. As a young woman, she found herself drawn just as strongly to textiles, to wool, cotton, colour, and texture, and it was there that her path into handcrafted work began.

She studied textile tapestry under Carmen Miranda before training in goldsmithing, learning ethnic jewellery techniques in silver and copper under Uruguayan master Ewald Serra. Over the years, her work has moved through silver paired with silk, leather, African glass, horn, gemstones, and copper with patina and enamelled wire.

A turning point came through her study of Mapuche loom traditions, the telar mapuche, which reshaped both her technique and her sense of purpose. For close to a decade, Icha's research has centred on the role personal ornaments played in Andean societies, work that now informs every piece she makes: a way of holding onto the riches and knowledge of her cultural heritage.
