Montserrat Wöhlk (Chile)

Montserrat Wöhlk lives and works in Concepción, Chile, where she studied through university before travelling to Santiago to train in jewellery. Her path to jewellery wasn't direct. She began in veterinary medicine, then completed a degree in Industrial Design, and it was only afterwards that jewellery emerged, a chance to work on a smaller, more personal scale.

For over 20 years she has worked mainly in silver, often combined with gold using the Kuboo technique, a Korean method where a fine sheet of 24k gold is bonded to silver through pressure and heat, with no soldering involved. Montserrat is drawn to the way this technique allows her to draw directly onto the metal.

Her pieces move between geometric form and organic line. Each one begins with a feeling, sketched out freely, before the design becomes more considered and the piece takes its final shape.
